Wanli Liu,  Ph.D.

Principal Investigator, Distinguished Young Scholar of National Natural Science Foundation of China, Distinguished Professor/Scholar of Ministry of Education, Youth Science and technology innovation leader of Ministry of Science and Technology, China.

Wanli Liu is a tenured professor and Ph.D supervisor of the School of Life Sciences of Tsinghua University, and a researcher at the Institute of Immunology of Tsinghua University and the Center for Life Sciences. Supported by the National Science Fund for Distinguished Youth, Changjiang Scholars Distinguished Professor of the Ministry of Education, and Science and Technology Innovation Leaders of the Ministry of Science and Technology. Focus on the fundamental immunology research of B lymphocytes, and devote to the integration of interdisciplinary platforms to study the pathogenic mechanism involving B cell immune recognition, immune activation and related immune diseases. Multiple corresponding paper (including co-corresponding) was published in the aspect of the regulation of lymphocyte activation and related diseases (Science, J Exp Med, Cell Research, Leukemia and eLife), new pathways of lipid metabolism network regulating lymphocyte activation (Cell, PLOS Biology, Science Immunology, Cell Reports and Nature Communications), the new mechanism of antigen receptor microclusters regulating lymphocyte activation (Science Advances, PNAS and eLife 2019b) and the new model of mechanical force sensing regulating B cell activation (J Cell Biol, Science Signaling and eLife15/17) and other research directions. Related results were selected as part of the top ten medical science and technology news in China in 2018. Won the China Youth Science and Technology Award, WuXi AppTec Life Chemistry Outstanding Achievement Award, Tan Jiazhen Life Science Innovation Award, Shulan Medical Youth Award and other awards. Invited to hold lectures at domestic and foreign academic conferences (Keystone B cell conference in 2022, Antigen Receptor Signal Transduction Biennial Conference in 2022, 2018 and 2016 EMBO Conference, 2018 American Rheumatism Annual Conference, etc.). Served as an editorial board member of the Chinese Journal of Immunology, Rheumatology & Autoimmunity, Frontiers in Immunology; reviewed scientific research projects for NSFC, MOST, NIH, UK Wellcome Trust Foundation, Dutch Research Council, etc.; by 2021, a total of 6 post-doctoral fellows and 11 graduated PhDs have been trained , 6 masters graduated.

We combine immunological and biochemical experimental approaches with cutting-edge high resolution high speed live cell and molecule imaging techniques to investigate the function of lymphocyte cells. We are working on the studies of: (1) Lymphocytes activation and regulation; (2) Immune-diseases induced by abnormal lymphocyte activation; (3) Immunological memory; (4) Mechanosensing biology of lymphocytes; (5) Immune-evasion; (6) Next generation vaccines based on the new understanding of lymphocyte activation and function.
